Where to Workout in Red Deer
Ignite Fitness Red Deer is where I called home for quite a few years until my schedule became too hectic to keep up with an ongoing membership. This is where I fell in love with Olympic lifting, where I worked out throughout pregnancy, what inspired me to dabble in obstacle course racing, where I brought my baby to workout, where I was pushed to the limits and challenged to compete in the Crossfit Open, and where I made many friends. It’s been four years since I’ve been to Ignite, so it was nice to visit the gym again and see what was new and what remained the same.
About Ignite Fitness Red Deer
Ignite Fitness is not the place where you’ll walk in and feel intimidated by the athletes working out. It is somewhere you can walk in and feel like part of a family. Whether you’re a mama looking to get into shape after baby, the average Joe looking to workout after a long day at the office, or an athlete wanting to strengthen your skills, there is something for every walk of life here.
Ignite offers Crossfit, focusing on functional fitness for all levels and abilities, personal training for specific one-on-one or group training sessions, sports training for teams or individuals looking for extra conditioning and training, and kids training, which gives kids a chance to discover fitness in a fun and safe environment.
The gym itself hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s a basic warehouse, set up with all the equipment you need to get an effective workout. There are shower and change room facilities available as well. This isn’t the gym you come to you if you want to workout somewhere pretty. This is the gym you come to when you want to get sweaty and gritty.
New clients are invited in for a free trial and then a consultation to discuss goals and how Ignite can help them. From there, recommendations can be made on which level of commitment would work best for the client.
About the Classes
There are over 20 Crossfit classes a week as well as open gym times where you can come in and work on your skills of fit in your WOD (workout of the day) outside of a regular class. They also offer Crossfit Mamas class daily that allows you to bring your kids along to play while you get your sweat. The evening Crossfit classes are surprisingly quieter than the daytime classes, which comes with the bonus of receiving even more focused attention from the trainers.
A typical class begins with a warm-up, a strength portion to work on Olympic lifts, and then the WOD. WODs can have different formats such as AMRAP (as many rounds as possible) where you complete as many rounds of the prescribed movements within a certain time frame, or Tabatas, when you do as many reps in 20 seconds, then rest for 10 seconds, and repeat 8 times. Our workout when we visited last week consisted of 30 seconds burpees, 30 seconds rest for a full 10 minutes. Gross, right? But man did we feel it the next day!
Prices Range from $125 – $210 per month.
There are three commitment levels, 3 months, 6 months, 12 months and within those there is a 2 times per week package and an unlimited package.
2 times/week – $160
Unlimited – $210
2 times/week – $145
2 times/week – $125
What I Loved Most
I really just love Crossfit in general but I love that this gym, in particular, feels like family. Classes are small enough that you are getting basically personalized training and they are really focused on helping you reach your goals above all else. If you’ve never tried Crossfit or Olympic lifting and are looking for a new challenge, this is your place. Plus, you’ll feel like a total badass slinging all those heavy weights, I promise.
