That’s how long you’ve been alive. It feels like just yesterday that you came into my life and yet it also feels like a lifetime ago. I couldn’t be more grateful to have you to and to be able to call myself your mama.
This has been a big year for you with the start of kindergarten. You’ve been asking to go to school for a couple years now and your excitement for the first day was infectious. There were no tears shed on my end because I was so darn proud of you for walking into school with no fear. Your teacher has already commented on how smart you are. You don’t really like answering questions though, which is something we need to work out. Not only so you can continue to show your teachers how smart you are and succeed in school, but because we always want to know what’s going on in your life and we can’t know unless you tell us! I hope this is something you will eventually grow out of. You were quick to make a new friend right off the bat and I can see that you’ve taken to liking the other kind-hearted kids in your class. I hope you’ll always stick by those kids. You haven’t forgotten your day home buddies though and certainly not your best friend in Calgary.
You were quick to make a new friend right off the bat at school and I can see that you’ve taken to liking the other kind-hearted kids in your class. I hope you’ll always stick by those kids no matter where you go. You certainly haven’t forgotten your day home buddies, they are still special to you and so is your best friend in Calgary. You haven’t quite connected with other kids like you did with Caden so long ago, which is how I know your friendship is truly special.
Sometimes I feel guilty that I wasn’t able to give you a sibling close to your age so you have someone to play with all the time. While you are around kids a lot at school and day home, you often hang out with mostly adults when you’re at home with me and visiting family. Because of this, you tend to pick up some pretty hilarious phrases, including, “after you, my mama” while you hold a door open for me. Don’t ever stop being a gentleman. And don’t even stop being the funny guy you are.
Speaking of being a gentleman, you still love to dress nice. You picked out some nice pants and button up shirts for school and still love to rock a bow-tie. You’ve taken to carefully choosing an outfit and laying it out before you go to bed at night sometimes. I’m not even sure where you picked that up from because it certainly wasn’t me. You just went through a growth spurt and we had to replace most of your pants and shoes, just in time for the change of season. You’re wearing size 5-6 clothes and size 12 shoes. You also just moved to a booster seat, which will make the winter commute to school in a snowsuit much easier than in a 5-point harness car seat. I can’t believe you’re big enough for just a booster seat. Weren’t you just a tiny little thing in a bucket seat? You’re still a pretty good eater even though you don’t usually like to stop for supper. It takes some convincing to get you to finish your dinner and we always stress the importance of each food you eat. You love pizza and sushi and currently are on a huge sandwich kick. Yogurt and pancakes still remain a favourite too. Famoso is probably your favourite place to go out to eat and is the location for most of our date nights.
You impress me so much with how well you can build things. Lego has become your favourite thing to play with over the past year and you can now follow the directions and build your Lego sets all by yourself. This doesn’t come as a surprise since you’ve been an amazing builder since you were little. Much to my chagrin, you’re still weapons obsessed, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t kind of want to buy you an arsenal of Nerf guns. We have some pretty epic Nerf battles with Grandma and Grandpa. You also really love your stuffed animals. You have to find a stuffy for all the new animals that you learn about and love, like camels and sloths. Do you know how hard it is to find uncommon animals like that? Your double bed is getting a bit crowded.
Everyone comments on how well behaved you are. And for the most part, it’s true. But at home, you can be just as strong-willed as ever and you have some pretty crazy meltdowns. I’m looking forward to the days those are a distant memory. Regardless of what happens during the day, we almost always end the night and start the next morning with some giggles, fierce hugs and kisses. I love the way you wrap your arms so tight around my neck and give me the gentlest kisses. One of my favourite things is lying in bed with you, playing our little games and listening to you giggle.
I’m excited that you will soon have a backyard to play in, a park down the street that we can walk to and more space to be the wild and crazy boy that you are. I absolutely cannot wait for the year ahead and to watch you learn and grow more.
I love you to the moon and back and to the moon and back and to the moon and back. Happy birthday.
