Where to Workout in Red Deer
Orangetheory Fitness is not new to me. I first tried a class about a year ago in Calgary and fell head over heels. I ended up taking a class again when the Red Deer location opened and couldn’t get enough. If you’re looking for a bigger challenge than other group fitness classes but aren’t quite ready to commit to a personal trainer, Orangetheory Fitness Red Deer should definitely be on your radar.

Orangetheory Fitness Red Deer has been open in Clearview Market for just over one year now. Featuring top of the line equipment, (we’re talking the most heavenly treadmills and water rowers), music to get you pumped up and trainers who make sure you’re doing your best, OTF Red Deer is the place to be.
Like most OTF locations, you walk into a small reception area where you can ditch your outdoor shoes, check in, and stash your belongings in one of the free lockers while you fix your heart rate monitor and wait to begin class. There is a small retail section where you can purchase OTF clothing and swag to keep you looking fresh. The sweat towels are a popular and much-needed item for these workouts, trust me.
About the Workouts
OTF is a heart rate based workout that combines treadmill interval training, rowing, and weight training combined into a 60 or 90-minute group exercise class. With the use of heart rate monitors, the goal of the class is to spend the majority of your workout in the ‘green zone’ which is the fat burning zone. As you proceed throughout your workout, you’ll accumulate splat points, which actually indicate the number of fat cells you’ve burned. Your secondary goal is to get 12-20 splat points by being in the ‘orange zone’, which is a secondary goal for your workout. The science behind this format of training is that you will achieve an afterburn effect, which keeps you burning more calories for up to 36 hours after your workout is finished.
This workout is great for all fitness levels and abilities as you truly work at your own pace. For the cardio portion on the treadmill, your paces differ if you are speed walking, jogging or running or you can modify to a lower impact elliptical as necessary. The floor portion uses various equipment such as dumbells, TRX, Bosu, etc with no prescribed weights. While having your stats on a central screen, you may think there is an element of competition but you’re generally too focused on your own workout to check out anyone else’s numbers. Even so, everyone’s heart rate is different and affected by different things day to day so you really can’t compare.
The trainers do a fantastic job of leading two different groups (floor and treadmill) through their blocks of work at the same time, while making sure everybody is working with proper form and staying motivated. I love the energy they create and how they can make a group fitness class feel like a small group personal training class. I’ve had four different trainers at the Red Deer OTF location and found them all to be highly motivating and kept the classes super fun.
Another cool thing about OTF is that no matter where you attend an Orangetheory class, the workout of the day is the same in all locations, which is really cool.

What I Loved Most
I was smitten with OTF from my very first workout over a year ago. I love the atmosphere, the dark room, the loud music and not really having to think about what I need to be doing. I love being challenged on the treadmills to run paces I’m not generally motivated to run, knowing that I’m building speed and endurance. I also love that if you’re travelling and visit another OTF location, it will have the exact same setup and do the exact same daily class anywhere you go. That also means I can text my friends in other cities and talk about how the workout made me feel barfy and they totally understand.
