Where to Workout in Red Deer

Many years ago, my fitness journey introduced me to the world of Crossfit. One sip of that Koolaid and I was hooked. My time as a Crossfitter spanned a few years and saw me through the pregnancy of my now four-year-old son. In fact, my last Crossfit workout before he was born was on my due date and I was back at it as soon as I was cleared to workout following his birth. I continued with Crossfit during my year of maternity leave, even competing in my first competition, the Crossfit Open. Shortly after returning to work and figuring out life as a full-time working, single mom, my Crossfit life was forced to an end. I have missed it a lot over the last few years, so when we finally scheduled a workout at a Crossfit gym in the city, I was a mixed bag of excited and nervous, excited to be back, but nervous about starting from the bottom again. Despite my fears, Jessica and I had a great time, worked up the biggest sweat yet from this series and had absolutely nothing to fear. But enough about me, let’s talk about the gym.

About Pure Crossfit Red Deer

Pure Crossfit Red Deer supports athletes of all ages and abilities. People often have a preconceived notion that Crossfit is an exclusive sport, only for a certain type of person, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Crossfit stems from functional fitness that can be applied to life’s daily movements and the workouts can be scaled to every individual’s abilities. From pre-school age, kids, teens, beginners, sports clubs and seasoned Crossfitters alike, there is a class for everyone.

Pure Crossfit is a huge gym equipped with all the necessary Crossfit equipment, plus an assortment of balls and rollers for mobility work. They offer showers and change rooms plus Pure apparel and supplements. Did I mention there are also puppies? The two sweetest Burmese Mountain Dogs greeted us as we arrived at the gym. Any business that allows dogs wins my heart for sure.

About the Classes

Most Crossfit workouts are similar in that you start with a warm up, spend time working on a skill or strength movement that’s incorporated into the WOD (workout of the day), complete the WOD and then potentially complete a cash-out exercise. It seems like a lot to complete in 60 minutes, but the WOD’s are generally short and (not so) sweet.

Some of the movements you may learn are quite technical, which is why it’s beneficial to take an On-Ramp class to learn the Crossfit basics. The On-Ramp class is a 3-class session that will get you fully ready to dive into regular classes.

There are also classes for kids ranging from preschool to teen so that kids of all ages can learn the Crossfit fundamentals, be challenged and rewarded. A great part of Crossfit is that success is based on your individual effort which is an important learning opportunity for kids.

What I Loved Most

Well, aside from the fact that there were puppies? I loved that this gym was welcoming of us in our various degrees of Crossfit knowledge and experience. Despite feeling intimidated before I walked in, I felt like I was respected just as much as the regular beasts. It doesn’t matter what age or experience level you’re at, you’re still a part of the Crossfit family. Special shoutout here goes to the little 14-year-old chick who was traveling with her family and stopped in to crush a class. I truly believe that once you join a Crossfit gym, you’re immediately a part of the Crossfit family, which in my opinion, is a pretty great family to be a part of. Did I mention they have puppies?

I still haven’t tried Crossfit! Do you think you’ll ever go back as a regular member?

I would absolutely go back in a heartbeat. Once upon a time I wanted to get my coaching certification and would definitely consider that again in the future.

Why do there have to be so many awesome places to work out?!
I need to win the lottery so I can have all the fitness memberships and spend all my time working out. Ha!

Right? Puppies make everything more awesome.

Honestly, I think I have about 15 more places on my list not including some new places opening up in the next few months.
