This weekend was definitely one for the books, so I thought I’d pop in for a quick weekend recap
Liam and I headed home after work to meet a high school friend who was coming for a visit. He works overseas so we don’t get to see much of him anymore and I was surprised when he offered to bring dinner and hang out for the evening.
Unfortunately, in the wee hours of the night, I came down with a tummy bug that had struck Liam earlier in the week and not a lot of sleep was had by me.
I said goodbye to my friend in the morning and then to Liam shortly after that when his dad came to pick him up. Luckily my stomach problems had subsided in time for me to get showered and packed for a trip to Edmonton with Ange.
First stop wa Wild Child for kombucha howler fills plus a cup to drink on the road.
Next stop was in Lacombe for cannoli because, when in Central Alberta, you must experience the epic-ness of Sweet Capone’s.
When we finally made it to Edmonton we were in desperate need of lunch. Given that both Ange and I had been feeling under the weather, we decided Pho was the best option and stopped at the first Pho place we could find on Yelp. It was just what we needed to continue our adventure. We made our way from Pho to Situation Brewing to meet up with Scott and Mary for some tasting flights. I’m a pretty big fan of Situation’s saison so was excited when they tapped a coconut saison cask shortly before we needed to head out.
We left to our perspective hotels to check in and get cleaned up, but since it was Garth weekend, the hotel was busy and check in took forever. We barely had time to get changed and head out to make our dinner reservation with Scott and Mary at Underground. We shared a bunch of appies and indulged in a couple more pints before taking an Uber to Rogers Place for the concert.
We arrived at a giant lineup to get into the building but luckily were in our seats with plenty of time for Garth to hit the stage. The concert was phenomenal and Ange and I had a blast singing and dancing along. I was heartbroken when it ended, the two and a half hours went by far too quickly.
Luckily, our hotel was right across the street from the concert venue so we headed up to our room and hit the sack. Clearly, we are party animals.
We woke up ravenous but luckily had a bunch of cannoli to snack on before brunch. We hit up Blue Plate Diner for eggs benny and mimosas the size of our face. Conveniently, Jacek was across the street so we naturally had to pop in for some fancy chocolates. We each picked up a bar containing edible gold and oh man, is it delicious.
The tea saison from Situation was still calling our names and since it was on our way out of the city, we popped in for growler fills before heading home. I crawled into bed for a much-needed nap as soon as Ange dropped me off.
I was unsuccessful in the nap department and eventually crawled out of bed to go for dinner and then came home to finish the second half of Santa Clarita Diet and watch the first episode of Riverdale before being too tired to keep my eyes open anymore.
My original plans to head out to Abraham Lake for Family Day fell through but rather than a relaxing day at home catching up on cleaning and meal prep, I made an impromptu trip to Banff with the dude guy for some touristy exploring. First stop was drinks and snacks at Banff Brewing followed by a Beaver Tail. I’d never had one before but have heard they are Banff must. We wandered Banff Ave for a little while before taking a drive out to Lake Minnewanka, saying hi to some elk, taking some photos and heading back to town for dinner at Magpie and Stump.
I don’t usually spend a lot of time in Banff, and while I would have liked to do some outdoor exploring, it was a fun way to spend the day. Not fun was the long drive home, especially when traffic was at a crawl for a good portion of the way to Calgary.
It was definitely a fun weekend, but I’m ready to catch up on my sleep and get caught up on life now.
What did you get up to for the long weekend?
