Where To Workout in Red Deer: Body Basics
After checking out lots of specialty studios focused on specific types of workouts or classes, it was time to visit a regular old gym for those of you who just want to do your thing. Jessica and I braved the -30 temperatures to explore all that Body Basics has to offer and check out one of their group classes. The thing you’ll notice right off the bat is that the facility and equipment are outdated, however, it’s still clean and well maintained so if you don’t mind the 80’s throwback, this place is for you.
About Body Basics
Body Basics is a Red Deer classic and has been in service for over 30 years. It also might be one of the largest facilities I’ve visited so far, with rooms and equipment that went on forever. There is definitely no shortage of weights and machines for you to do your thing with. If you’re looking to mix up your regular cardio and weight routine, there are also group fitness classes (TRX, boot camp, yoga, and more) and one of Red Deer’s only squash courts (there are also courts at the college).
Short on time? Visit the 30-minute workout room where you can complete a quick strength training circuit. Alternately, there’s also a Curves-style circuit to hit it hard at upstairs. There are rows upon rows of cardio equipment with plenty of opportunities to get your heart rate high before you hit the weights. Fan of Hammer Strength equipment? They have that too. Past the squash courts, you’ll find everything you need for Olympic lifting and much more.
If you’re not sure where to start, each membership comes with a free orientation with a personal trainer with additional personal training sessions available at an extra cost.
The front desk offers a selection of apparel for sale, equipment rentals and a large offering of snacks, protein shakes, supplements and even beer to refuel after your workout. It doesn’t stop there, though, you can also access indoor tanning rooms, towel and laundry services, nutritional counseling, info seminars and clinics and more. Phew. They really do have a lot to offer.

What I Loved Most
While I personally gravitate to bright, modern, boutique spaces, I appreciate that for a relatively low monthly cost, Body Basics has absolutely everything you need for your workout program.
Also, there was quite a bit of eye candy, ladies 😉
