Where to Workout in Red Deer
The inspiration for starting the Where to Workout series came from a friend asking if I’ve ever checked out YogaNation and what the studio was like. I really wanted to be able to tell him my thoughts, because I love helping introduce people to new places, but I hadn’t been there before. It’s because of that simple question that I decided to visit all of the different studios and facilities in the city so the next time someone asks, “Hey, have you been here before? What’s it like?” I can give them an answer. So while YogaNation wasn’t the first stop of the series, it was definitely the inspiration for starting it. I was excited to meet up with Jess from Bond Nutrition to check it out and let that friend know what to expect. Troy, this one is for you!
YogaNation is one of the newer yoga studios in the city, located in Clearview Market. They’re just entered their third year of business, bringing the world of yoga to the bustling east corner of the city. You instantly feel like a part of their yoga community when you walk in the door and they work hard to provide that community feel for everyone to enjoy the gift of yoga.
They aim to be environmentally conscious, from the use of non-toxic paint and LED lights, to plant based cleaning products. There are spacious change rooms with large showers to rinse off after a sweaty practice, and tons of cubby holes and lockers to store your stuff while you’re in class. I loved the inspiring blackboard in the women’s change room for which to leave notes of things you’re giving up for the year.
Their practice space is heated with a ThemaRay Heating System, which provides radiant heat that feels similar to the warmth of the sun but without the harmful UV rays. When people think hot yoga, they usually tend to think of the Bikram style, which can be seen as almost militant style teaching and stifling hot and humid studios. These aren’t always enjoyable to most people. At YogaNation’s hot yoga classes, you get a completely different experience.
About the Classes
The heated classes are not overbearing, stuffy or hard to handle. The heating system is designed to slowly warm you from the inside out and feels perfect on a chilly winter day. The benefits of heated yoga included increased flexibility, detoxification, deeper relaxation and more calories burned. I definitely notice that I’m slightly bendier in a heated class and walk out feeling even more amazing than usual.
YogaNation offers a mix of heated and non-heated classes in a variety of styles including their main class, Power Flow. They also offer, hatha, yin, sculpt, prenatal classes and special workshops and private classes as well. Their website also mentions they will be offering aroma and kids yoga in the future. I would personally love to take a candlelight class to unwind one evening. Be sure to check out their schedule to find the right class for you.

What to Wear/Bring
You will want to wear comfortable breathable clothing. You will get sweaty, but not enough that you need to show up in a bathing suit. I was comfortable enough in crops and a tank. Of course, you’ll need a yoga mat and water and you may want to bring a towel to wipe off the sweat and a yoga towel if you have a more slippery mat.
YogaNation provides a complimentary mat and towel rentals for your first class and subsequent rentals are $2.
What I Loved Most
I wish that I had the technology to share how beautiful this studio smelled with you guys. Seriously, it smelled amazing. My favourite thing was the small studio that allowed me to feel connected with the instructor and feel the energy from the other yogis in the room without feeling claustrophobic and cramped. The staff was so warm and welcoming and provided such a great experience that I wished the studio wasn’t on the other side of the city so I could adopt a regular hot yoga practice with them!
