Where to Workout in Red Deer

It seems that boxing workouts are rising in popularity lately so it’s no suprise that our next stop in the “Where to Workout in Red Deer” series took us to the newly opened 9Round Red Deer. While this wasn’t my first time hitting the bags, it definitely came with new-t0-me movements, lots of sweat and tears (of laughter).

About 9Round Red Deer

Walking into 9Round feels like you’re walking into a Brooklyn boxing club, dimly lit with the tune cranks and the faces boxing’s greatest hanging on the wall. The rapidly growing franchise has new locations popping up all over the world. It began as a place for the avegare person to receive some of the “top secret” training of some of the world’s best fighters. Founder Shannon Hudson took his years of martial arts training and created a circuit style workout that included boxing and kickboxing style movements that alone can do.

9Round not only uses the best boxing moves to get you into shape, but it also incorporates heart rate training and expert nutrtion. Heart rate training is increasing in popularity, using technology to keep you working in the right zone for optimal fat burning to help get you the results you want. 9Round heart rate monitors connect to a screen where you can see where your heart rate is while working out so you know if you need to work harder or back off a little. Immediately after your workout, your results are emailed to you and you also get a monthly workout summary to see your progress over a longer period of time.

9Round Red Deer Workout Summary

As if all that isn’t enough, 9Round members have access to a nutrition portal where you can view custom meal plans to help you acheive optimal results. Daily meal plans are customized specifically for your body and nutrition needs with weekly coaching emails and access to nutrition coaches to answer any questions.

About the Workouts

With no class times and only 30 minute circuits, 9Round is a great option if you’re looking to burn maximum calories in minimum time. Workouts consist of 9 rounds lasting 3 minutes each, with a 30 second rest or active recovery in between.

The first two stations are for strength which can encorporate dumb bells, kettlebells, medicine balls, jump ropes and more. The next six stations are all kickboxing stations where you punch and kick heavy bags, double-end bags and speedbags to build power, increase coordination, and develop speed and conditioning. The final round targets your abs and core to help improve any movements used for work, fitness and daily life.

A trainer is always with you to demo the days movements, offer modifications, motivate you and maybe even make you laugh. As you become more comfortable with the movements and techniques, trainers can progress you into even more difficult movements to keep you working hard. The workouts change daily so you won’t ever get bored and each movement is written beside the station so you have an idea what you’re doing when you get to the station.

What I Loved Most

I had so much fun at 9Round, it’s hard to identify what I loved the most. Boxing workouts are so cathartic for me but I love that this gym has a laid back feel and that I could laugh at myself when I wasn’t quite coordinated to catch on to the speedbag right away. The trainers made the workout a lot of fun and joked around while still being professional and making sure we were working properly and effectively. I also love that these workouts use heart rate training.

There’s a 9Round’s close to me! (by south centre mall). I’ve always wondered what it’s all about. This sounds so fun! I’ve never done a workout like this. We so desperately need ClassPass to come to Canada so we don’t have to commit to just one gym – I want to do it all, haha!

Great article! I hate when I can’t find info like this on the gym’s website, so this is super helpful. I’m wondering though, do you have to purchase the heart rate monitors or is that optional?

I believe it’s optional whether you want to purchase and use a HRM or not. They do have some to use if you’re just testing it out.

I just heard about this place here in Calgary too! Sounds super fun. I love boxing workouts! I think it’s great that there are no set class times, that’s super convenient! Plus short effective workouts are my jam!
