On Sunday I was treated to what is probably the funnest fitness class I’ve ever taken (how many times have I said that in my life?). Seriously though, POUND at Oranj Fitness in Airdrie stole my heart. I walked into the studio having zero idea what to expect from the class and walked out dripping in sweat.
When I was in high school I briefly took drum lessons. I’ve always been obsessed with music and drumming was something I really wanted to get into. The downfall was my mom wouldn’t let me get a drumset so my drum career fizzled quickly. Picking up a pair of sticks as part of a workout was like the marriage of two of my favourite hobbies. A dream come true.
So what is POUND?
Well, to put it clearly, POUND is a workout that feels more like a dance party that distracts you from feeling how hard your body is actually working. Using weighted drum sticks called RipStix, you move through intervals set to your favourite songs that have you daydreaming that you’re a kickass drummer in your favourite rock band.
Each song brings a new set of intervals intended to shoot up your heart rate and get you into the fat burning zone. Looking back on my TomTom Spark data, this is most definitely a true statement. You rip through hundreds of reps of squats, lunges, crunches, twists and more without even realizing what you’re doing to your body. The RipStix help work your stability muscles as well as your shoulders, arms and back while you’re burning through the body weight movements.
The workout is easily modified and our instructor was great on showing us how to make it more or less intense based on your abilities. That makes it a great class for anybody. It didn’t even matter if you were on the same beat as anybody else, our instructor Cheryl insisted that as long as you were moving your body, that’s all that mattered. That really took away the pressure of trying to keep up with faster, more complicated movements.
Decked out in glow sticks, with black lights and disco balls, this workout felt like more like a mid-afternoon party with the squad. Often times during a class I’m watching the clock wondering when the torture will be over but I was legit bummed out when this class was over because I could have kept going all day long. The best part was, I felt that workout burn for two days after. I walked out of that studio a sweaty mess, feeling like a total rockstar and wondering when I could go back.
Our instructor’s energy was infectious. You could tell she was a rock chick, having been a professional drummer in the ’80s and it added to the vibe. As did rockin out with my fit chick squad.
