Fitness Friday: How I Learned to Squat

Happy Friday everyone! I’m thankful for the long weekend. The time change has a certain small human waking up at obsene hours again so last night I crawled into bed with a mug of tea and my book shortly after Liam fell asleep. I’m hoping to take Liam to a Remembrance Day ceremony today. We’ve been so fortunate with unseasonably warm weather that I want to take advantage of to watch the outdoor ceremony in the city. We also need to do some shopping for a certain princess’s birthday. Liam is pretty excited to celebrate with Avery tomorrow. He loves birthdays so much! Besides that, we have no weekend plans. Hopefully we can spend some time outdoors and maybe go to a movie.

Let’s talk about fitness, shall we? This week I atteneded a movement assessment at Absolute Fitness. This is required before joining the gym to determine your level of mobility for them to recommend where they recommend starting. It was very quick and basic. I was taken through a series of movements in about 15 minutes. In that short amount of time I learned a lot about the way my body works.

Currently I have a very tight neck and shoulders as a result of my desk job which requires some trigger point therapy to loosen up. We found that the right side of my body is much stronger than my left, likely as a result of carrying Liam on that side for the last four years. When it came time to do a squat, I knew what they were going to say. I’ve been told by numerous trainers over the years that I need to focus on pushing my knees out when I do squats. I did my squat and sure enough, my knees turn inward. He squeeze my butt and core and squat again. He watched as a tightened everything, turning my femur bone out slightly before moving into my squat. MY KNEES DIDNT TURN IN!! It was the most simple adjustment and it worked 100%. I couldn’t believe not one of my trainers before took the time to suggest this (or perhaps they just didn’t know). I already know I’m going to love my time at Absolute. They are dedicated to ensuring their members become better at movement to be able to perform in whatever they’re doing, whether they’re athletes, moms who need to carry their kids, or someone starting out on their fitness journey.

    My hips are so bad these days. I can barely sit without them aching and have no idea why!

      Mine have been pretty bad too. I’m so terrible for making time to stretch them.

    You can show off your new squatting moves at the drumming class next weekend! 😉 Haha! I hear it’s a lot of squatting…and I’m thinking I might just have to watch lol.
