Where to Workout in Red Deer
I think my new mission in this series is to find a workout that I don’t enjoy. When I walked into Jazzercise Red Deer I assumed I’d be frustrated by not being able to keep up with the choreography and not getting a good workout. I was wrong. While I did my share of flailing, I walked out of there sweating and smiling every time.
About Jazzercise Red Deer
Jazzercise isn’t at all like the picture in your head, with your mom in her 80’s workout get up. It’s a high energy, dance cardio workout that will having you sweating and setting your muscles on fire by the end. You won’t even notice how much you’re working, because you’ll be too busy having fun dancing along to the music. You walk into the Red Deer location, greeted by a group of friendly ladies and possibly a gaggle of children running around. Everyone is super supportive and encouraging, there to have a great time and move their bodies. You can find all demographics in the classes, from young to old, big and small, and even some men too!
While we were there, we got to experience new instructors leading their very first classes, who turned to instructing because they just loved coming to the classes so much. That’s how much fun you can expect to have, enough that you never want to stop. All of the instructors are high energy and there to make sure everyone is getting a good workout and most importantly, having fun.
About the Classes
There are several different class formats, Strike, Fusion, Core, Strength and Dance Mixx, which will get your heart rate up, tone your muscles and torch calories. Every class starts and ends with some stretching tracks to loosen you up. For strength portions, you may end up using dumbbells, resistance bands, balls, and mats.
Every song comes with a different set of movements, so you never feel like you’re doing the same move forever.Jazzercise is fast paced but still easy to follow with high and low impact modifications demonstrated for all levels. What I like is that they use the same tracks throughout the week, so you have time to get used to them before they switch them out. The following week, only half of the tracks will be new, so you’re not totally starting over again. We caught on to the choreography quite quickly but it’s definitely a workout for the brain as much as the body.

What to Wear
You don’t need to dig out your neon spandex and leg warmers. You will need to wear something comfortable you can move in, like crops and a tank top, and comfortable sneakers that allow lateral movement.
What I Loved Most
I loved that Jazzercise appeals to the general population. You don’t have to have any sort of dance background to have a good time and get a good workout. Once I had my first class under my belt (the one where I felt like I was flailing and off beat the entire time), I was able to relax, have fun, and shake it like no one was watching. And really, no one was watching because they were all too busy with their own moves. At the end of class, you walk out feeling like you could be on a music video.
