Summer Workouts That Don’t Feel Like Workouts

There’s been a noticeable absence of fitness posts on the blog and social media channels the last few weeks. It even feels like it’s been months since I’ve laced up for a run or completed any formal workout. But I promise you I haven’t been an inactive slug the entire time (I mean, there have been days…).

Summertime just feels like the time to be free to adventure and not tied down to a plan. My race season came and went in the spring and early summer which means I haven’t been committed to anything. Instead, I’ve been turning to the outdoors for my fitness playground, staying active in ways that don’t even feel like working out, it’s just me enjoying summer. Want to follow suit? Here’s some summer workouts that don’t feel like workouts:

  • Yoga in the Park
    This is hands down, one of my favourite things about summer evenings and I’ve been lucky to make it to quite a few classes this year with Liam’s dad being in the city full time. Check with your local yoga studio to see if they offer any outdoor yoga classes and take your asana out in the sunshine!

  • SUP
    Days at the lake come with plenty of relaxing on the patio, drink in hand and appies nearby. But it also means getting a sneaky workout on the stand up paddle board. It’s such a fun and relaxing activity for me and I love that Liam enjoys riding on the board with me. It never feels like much of a workout until the next day when my upper body and core are thanking me for the good times.

  • Hiking
    been out for one major hike this year and have plans to fit in at least one or two more before fall. Not only do I get rewarded with some pretty spectacular views, but my non-experienced hiker body feels the climb for days. You don’t need to summit a mountain to get in a good workout either. There are tons of trails for all levels to enjoy

  • Bike Riding
    Unfortunately, I don’t have my own bike right now (anyone want to buy me an Electra?) but Liam has been cruising the neighbourhood on his balance bike while I hustle alongside him. I can’t wait for the days when we can both ride together or he rides while I run.

    Bike riding is such fun exercise! I love going on bike trails and discovering nature 🙂

    Haha, I’m not. 😉 I agree…summer is much harder to stick to a schedule (or find the motivation). I think it’s because so many things to do pop up last minute during the summer! I also don’t like to workout outside in the hot heat, so there’s that. But hiking is good!

      It definitely is hard to stick to a schedule but unfortunately for consistency sake, I NEED a schedule. Thank goodness so many activities I enjoy in the summer keep me somewhat active, but it feels good to be following a plan again, that I can change as other things pop up. Like going to my first barre class tonight!!

    I like hiking, always feel so wonderful when standing on the top of a mountain. SUP is interesting and outside yoga is great. Oh I like all the workouts you shared. Thanks so much!
