Fitness Friday: Meeting John Stanton

November 27, 2015

Bare with me if this post makes little sense. I’m writing on about four hours of broken sleep. Liam threw up in bed in the middle of the night so there was consoling and laundry happening during the wee hours of the morning. *yawn*

At least it wasn’t yesterday that I was at home with a sick kiddo, or I would have missed a great opportunity to listen to John Stanton give a keynote address at the Festival of Trees Business Luncheon. I was thrilled when I was given the chance to go for work. John was a fantastic speaker and told the story of how the Running Room came to be. It was an inspiring story both on the personal side and business side. John went from being an overweight smoker to a marathon runner and used that to start his business out of an old house and growing it into a successful business with 137 stores throughout Canada and the US. Suddenly I was inspired to work hard on my running goals and am even more excited to return to the Calgary Marathon in May in search of a new PR.

Everyone in attendance received a copy of one of John’s books, Running: The Complete Guide to Building Your Training Program. There is so much great information in this book for runners of all levels. I’m really excited to dig into it and learn how to improve my running. Even more exciting, John was doing autographs after the event so I made sure I jumped into line to get my book signed. We had a quick chat about my training and goals and I left feeling very inspired. I wanted to grab a photo with him as well, but I managed to grab a couple extra books to get signed and didn’t want to hold up the line any longer.

Have you read any of John’s books before? If not, here’s your chance. I snagged an extra copied, got it signed and am giving it away to one lucky reader! Just follow the prompts below and I’ll announce the winner on Monday!

Having working for the RR for a few brief months it’s safe to say I no long know how I feel about John Stanton and the RR. I was so geared up for an awesome job where I got to talk about running all the time but it was just a terrible work environment. BUT I love how inspired you are and the company truly is pretty exceptional, especially because it was started right here in Alberta and now is known around the world! I know you are going to kick some ass in Calgary Becky!!

Sounds like a fantastic luncheon! I don’t know a ton about John, but I do love his story about how he started The Running Room. And I’m always extra proud when it’s a Canadian company. My first real foray into running was with The Running Room – I was in my first year of nursing school and I convinced two classmates of mine to register for the 5k learn to run. It was one of the most positive experiences I’ve ever had with running! I always say I’m going to go back there to join another program, but I haven’t yet…but maybe I will now that we are settled in an area of the city and there’s one close to my house. I’m not signed up for any races next year yet, though!

I agree, it’s always cool hearing about the continued success of Canadian businesses like that.

You’re going to do Calgary again though, right?!?!?!

That’s fun that you got to hear him speak and get a book signed by him! I have a copy of it already and it’s a great resource for new runners. Hope Liam is feeling better after the middle of the night puke!

Oohhhh Man! I would love to read this book. I’m going to do the Woody’s Half in 2016 🙂 I miss running and am looking forward to adding it back in through a structured schedule in the new year!

OOOH! Awesome! I will probably run the Woody’s 10k again in 2016. It’s two weeks before Calgary Marathon which is a little crazy but I really enjoyed running last year.

I’m with you, mostly just a fun runner but after running a bunch of races in 2015, I’m motivated to break some PR’s! Good luck!

I’m a runner. I’m training for the Charleston Half Marathon in January and hoping to at least break 1:40 (but I’d love a 1:38-1:39…). This looks like a fun book!
