Fun, Fitness, Family – Bring It All Together!

February 4, 2014

Hi guys. Today I have a travel expert from Kendra Thornton: Travel advocate, TV spokesperson, PR businesswoman, proud wife and mama of 3. She’s got some great tips for how to stay fit while travelling with your family. With this cold snap we’re having, I can say that I would love to pick up my little family and head somewhere tropical right about now! Enjoy

Once again it’s time to celebrate Fit Family Lifestyles Month! Busy families with young kids do not need to sacrifice fun and fitness in order to take care of the necessities of life. In fact, just the opposite is true. A little planning and good advice can turn those everyday chores into adventures that will bring smiles to all while maintaining the best of health to your entire family, both at home and on the road.

What is a family without road trips? Enjoy them more with regular rest breaks. Experts suggest stopping every two hours or so, with good reason. Everyone, especially children, will feel better after stopping to stretch, play or take restroom breaks. Plus, this means more low stress family time together. Allow extra time to reach your destination, remembering that getting there is half the fun.

We all need to eat, so why not do it right? Keep healthy snacks on hand at all times. Great examples are fresh and dried fruits, string cheese, nuts, seeds, raisins, wheat crackers and chocolate bits. Use your imagination! A kitchen dehydrator will let the whole family enjoy both the making and the eating. How about a trip to a U-pick farm? Bring back a load of fresh produce and then dry it together. You will have quality family fun plus plenty of healthy food.

Have a change of clothes to switch between work and fun. Adults, have a pair of play clothes and running shoes handy for those morning jogs. Kids can pack their play clothes along with their dress clothes and learn what is appropriate at any given time.

Staying at a hotel? Bring your children’s favorite surroundings. The younger the child, the better this will work. Bringing sheets, blankets, books and equipment from home will make a strange bedroom more homelike.

And finally, plan ahead. Pick travel spots where everyone will enjoy learning, fun and exercise. Get your children’s input and help them look forward to the trip. They will thank you the rest of their lives.

Fit Family Lifestyles Month is a great time to insert healthier choices into your family’s daily lifestyle. Give some of these tips a try! Or come up with some of your own. Hopefully you can find some that work so well you will use them for years to come.
