Montreal – Day One

June 30, 2012

Last Thursday morning, Layne and I set off for the Calgary airport. It was the third week in a row of me being there due to dropping off my best friend and picking her up again, so I was excited that I finally got to get on a plane. We were off to Montreal for a little pre-baby getaway.

After a four hour trip we arrived and my anxiety about how we’d survive when neither of us spoke French set in. But that was the least of my worries, for when I checked the weather on arrival I saw this:

Then panic set in that I would die the entire week with temperatures like that since I had packed for rain, which is what the forecast called for the day before. Stupid Weather Network.

Heat aside, we caught a cab to our cute little boutique hotel, which we both loved. The Hotel Le Relais Lyonnais was small and quaint, with only five rooms and two suites but it had everything we needed, a bed and a shower. Layne liked that fact that there was an espresso machine in the room so he would try to sneak espresso in the morning when I got in the shower. He didn’t fool me, my pregnant super nose could smell it no problem.

(You will have to excuse the pictures as I forgot my camera so they are all iPhone pictures.)

Our hotel was located in the Latin Quarter which is an area popular with younger people as there is the UQAM (Université du Québec à Montréal). It’s rich with cafes, pubs, lounges and boutiques in the most beautiful old buildings. I loved the area. After we dropped our bags off at the hotel, we set off down the Rue St. Denis to explore the area and find some dinner.

We ended up at a little restaurant called Mache. It was our first time ordering a meal and we were lucky that the server spoke English, we had no trouble at all, which put my anxieties at ease. I ended up ordering a grilled cheese sandwich with fries. I was pumped when I got the fries and remember that the French eat their fries with mayo! So unhealthy, but so delicious. It was a decent, quick meal with great service. Just what we needed.

After dinner I spotted a fro-yo place and I just couldn’t resist a cool treat on a hot, humid evening!

Layne and I were both pretty tired after the day of travelling so we decided to call it a night and headed back to the hotel to bed. It was a good thing we did go to bed early because we sure packed a lot of stuff into the next two days!

Since this post is already lengthy enough, you’ll just have to stay tuned…;-)
