This week’s Friday Favorite isn’t clothing related this time, it’s food related! Big Bend Market is a local butcher market selling meat that is antibiotic and hormone free. They have anything from beef and chicken, to elk, bison, and even rabbit! Whatever cut of meat you want, you can probably get it here.
My absolute FAVORITE thing to buy is bison bacon. Really, who doesn’t love bacon? But bison bacon is just the bees knees. When cooked there is hardly any grease in the pan, which makes me feel like it’s not a bad choice for a protein source. It’s not the best, but it’s definitely not as bad as the store bought pork bacon dripping in fat. I’ve been using bison bacon in BLT wraps, loaded with organic lettuce and tomatoes and a bit of cheddar cheese on a whole wheat wrap. Makes for a delicious and filling lunch time meal. Of course, I also had the bison bacon on that darn bacon, egg and cheese sandwich that didn’t sit so well at the gym later that night. It was so delicious that it was worth it.
The only downfall to Big Bend is that some of their meats come in large boxes which is hard for me to justify buying for just myself and my tiny freezer. I’m hoping in the summer months I’ll be able to split a big box of bison burgers with a friend for grilling. Last time I was in I also discovered bison cheddar smokies which I may also have to pick up to have on hand for those summer BBQ’s I love so much.
Last time I was in the store, my boyfriend was with me and eyed up some of the jerky they had behind the counter. I encouraged him to try the bison jerky instead of the beef, which he did. So good.
Big Bend also carries other stuff like homemade bread, casseroles, perogies, local cheese, and lots lots more! I definitely recommend checking them out.
