Feeling Weak + Coconut Water

Nothing frustrates me more than not being able to do something. This is a regular occurrence at the gym if I’m doing any sort of strength work with my arms, and also lately with overhead squats. Overhead squats and I are quickly becoming mortal enemies. My left shoulder is all weird and significantly less flexible than my right which makes the overhead squats with any sort of weight nearly impossible. I mean, I can squat with the training bar no problem, but the 35lbs bar is a real struggle. Last week we had a WOD (Workout Of the Day) that incorporated overhead squats and I believe the prescribed weight for women was 65lbs. I used the training bar. I definitely was not proud of that. I’m hoping to go for a massage and loosen things up a bit and see if I can work on my flexibility in that shoulder.

My arms have always been my weakest part and I always struggle with any upper body work. My left arm especially causes me trouble sometimes because I tend to sleep on that arm and is often quite sore. It’s such a pain. Today I was doing bench presses. My last weight was 65lbs and all upper body lifts should be increased by 5lbs (according to my lovely trainer friend, Jasmine who I workout with). That extra 5lbs today was pretty much impossible. FIVE POUNDS! Who would have thought something so little made such a big difference. Next time bench presses, we’re doing that 70lbs whether you like it or not.

No matter how frustrated I am with the things I can’t accomplish, I know that there’s lots of things I do well and am proud of. Like the fact that I squatted 100lbs today (15lbs increase from last time) and that my deadlifts are up to 140lbs which is more than my body weight. If only the rest of my body was a strong as my lower body. With time, I will improve!

So one of the new trends in the health world is coconut water. It’s suppose to be a good alternative for hydration and electrolyte supplements and is popular in the yoga culture as well as endurance athletes. Lots of celebrities are beginning to endorse it now too, such as Rihanna. I’ve seen it popping up more and more around the grocery stores here so one day I bought the Zico brand, a pineapple flavor.

I really didn’t like it at all, and honestly didn’t even finish the bottle. I wasn’t sure if it was just the flavor I didn’t like so I didn’t write coconut water off completely. I eventually tried it again, another brand and just plain.

Nope, still don’t like it. It makes no sense to me because I love anything with coconut in it, I’m obsessed with the coconut scent, but I just can’t get into the plain old coconut water. Guess I’ll be sticking with regular water for my hydration needs and coconut milk for my liquid coconut fix.

Oh one last thing, I registered for the 2012 Calgary Spartan Race today. Who’s coming?

    I had coconut water from a real coconut and it was delicious!

    I have tried many types of coconut water and can’t do it. 🙁 Glad to find another Albertan! 🙂

    I’m glad I’m not the only one who loves everything coconut but hate coconut water! I can’t understand how people can drink the stuff…

    Try VITACOCO, it’s as close to natural that you can get.

    Other coconut waters try to come close but can’t. VITACOCO is great, and if you don’t like the taste after trying it, use it as a liquid in your smoothies. It’s great plain or mixed with a fruit smoothie.

    I hope you give VITACOCO a try, I have been drinking it for over a year and have had the best results.
