August Already?

August 1, 2011

I can’t believe it’s already August 1st! Where is summer going?

I guess it’s gone by so quick because I’ve been gallivanting around the world being in Ireland and Mexico for my best friend’s wedding. I feel like I’ve hardly been at home to enjoy my favorite summer activities such as hanging at the lake, floating down the river, and enjoying beverages on a patio under the sun.

I did manage to spend the weekend at my city’s annual street performer festival this past weekend. Centre Fest is one of my favorite things to do here in summer and I was lucky I got to enjoy it with some of my favorite people this year. I started off the festival Friday afternoon when I went to the ‘sneak peak’ BBQ with my coworkers. It was a perfect break from work and a nice change from going home for work for lunch. We saw briefly performances by a Chinese acrobatic duo, a ukulele cover band, a heavy metal magician and our home grown talent, Spandy Andy.

Saturday was a great day in the sun seeing extended action from all the performers. My favorite act of the day BY FAR was by the Be Arthurs, the ukulele cover band from Edmonton. The best cover song they did was Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ where they got up and did the dance part way through. Amazing. They were so fun I wish I could just pack them around in my pocket for whenever I need a good smile. Definitely check them out and go see them if they are ever performing near you.

Of course there was food to be enjoyed at the festival as well. Poutine from the local chip truck, Chester’s Chips, waffles from WannaWafel, lemonade, and ice cream! Yesterday we hit up one of my favorite places on the walk home, Cool Beans after discovering they made homemade ice cream sandwiches using home made cookies. I wasn’t hungry enough for a full ice cream sandwich but I did enjoy a dish of cookies and cream ice cream and sampled the Root Beer cookie. If you haven’t checked out Cool Beans yet, I suggest you head down there on the next sunny day, get a delicious iced beverage and one of these amazing cookies. I don’t know how they do it but they taste just like root beer soda. Can’t get much better than root beer and fresh baking.

This weekend was a great summer weekend but the remaining weeks of summer are filling up quick and are going to fly by! Some things I have to look forward to include:

– girls hiking trip in Banff
– a wedding after party for all the friends that couldn’t attend the Mexico wedding
– Blink 182 concert
– crossing not one, but TWO bucket list items off!

I’m excited to tell you all about all the excitement later in the month so stay tuned!

What else have I been up to?

After coming home from Mexico I realized how tired I was of eating perfectly clean every single day. Part of my favorite thing in summer is enjoying BBQ food and the odd cold drink here or there. I decided to be a little more slack with my diet but not going too overboard. At first I was unhappy with the changes I noticed but when I really think about it, I still look and feel pretty damn good and I shouldn’t worry too much. Soon summer will be over and I will be back to eating 100% clean in preparation for my last vacation of the year to Vegas for my 25th birthday!

I was also incredibly sick of eating chicken, rice and green beans 3 days a week. So much so that the thought of eating any of those three things makes me want to gag. I’ve been experimenting with some new to me foods such as Tempeh, and brown rice pasta, both of which I LOVE! My current favorite meal right now is 4oz sauteed shrimp, steamed asparagus or broccoli and cherry tomatoes over 1/3 cup of brown rice pasta. So yummy!

I’ve also switched gyms since returning from Mexico. The bootcamps were getting to be a little monotonous and I was feeling like a superstar which meant I needed more of a challenge. I switched to a Crossfit gym where my friend is a trainer and let me tell you, I’m no longer a superstar. Currently I’m nursing a sore back and traps from Friday’s workout. It’s been a challenge but I’m definitely enjoying it and looking forward to seeing my progress as I become stronger.

So there you have it folks, a little update from yours truly.

What do you have planned for the final weeks of summer?
