One of my favorite things about summer in Red Deer is the farmer’s market! It’s every Saturday morning until noon, which means I have to drag my butt out of a bed early, but a gaggle of us usually meet around 10am to wander through the crowds, eating delicious food and buying fresh produce and other local goodies.
Mostly we like to eat the food though.
A favorite of mine is the European Sausage and Deli guys who cook up various sausages and perogies. I don’t know why I LOVE sausage and perogies so much, I’m not even Ukranian! But it’s become my weekly routine to hit up this booth for an early lunch. I’ve been doing this faithfully for probably around three years now and the guys get so excited to see me. They get even more excited because I always ask for a ‘surprise combo’ which means they surprise me with the type of sausage I get. They love that!
If you haven’t checked out the European Sausage and Deli I encourage you to go check them out. You may have to wait in line but don’t let that discourage you. It just goes to show just how good their food is!
We are lucky to have such a great market here! What’s even more great is that starting June 1 the downtown market starts and will run every Wednesday from 4-7pm until October 5th. This market is a little smaller as vendors must live within a 70km radius of Red Deer.
Both markets are great opportunities to pick up local and fresh in-season produce, herbs, bread, pies and other baking, preserves, meat and eggs and more! Not only does shopping at the markets support the local economy, but you’re buying much better quality food. We need to eat more whole foods with less chemicals, preservatives and processing!
If you haven’t checked out the markets yet, GO! And keep checking back here for more of my favorite market vendors!
